Edinburgh is set up brilliantly for visitors, so you won’t struggle to find lovely places to explore, eat and drink. Here are a few of our favourites.

Activities

Edinburgh Castle

A must-see for first time visitors, the castle dominates the Edinburgh skyline and offers a glimpse of the history of the city. We suggest you book in advance, and allow 3 hours.

Climbing Arthur’s Seat

A hike of 1-2 hours, accessible from the center of town. We’ll be tackling this on Sunday morning for those who want to join us!

The Royal Yacht Brittania

Venture to the waterside in Leith to visit the ocean-ready Royal Residence, in use from 1939 to 1997. Leith is also a great spot to spend the day exploring it’s trendy cafes and arty spots.

Waterstone’s Prince’s Street

Waterstone’s? Seriously? But yes, this location of the bookstore has a charming cafe with incredible views of Edinburgh.

For those able to stay longer than the weekend, we strongly recommend venturing beyond the city, either into the Highlands or south to Yorkshire. Both best explored by car, but there are also a number of tour companies who can arrange group transport.

Eating and drinking

The Devil’s Advocate

Atmospheric gastropub and whiskey bar hidden down an alleyway in Old Town.

Pomelo

There are just a few tables at this modern Chinese fusion restaurant, just near the University. It’s lately our first stop when we arrive, and booking is absolutely necessary.

Petit Paris

A classic french bistro, just at the base of the charming and much-visited Victoria Terrace. Great value and always a lovely visit on a cold evening.

Ka Pao

Somewhat oddly located at the front of the St. James Quarter shopping center, but a great spot in New Town for SouthEast Asian cuisine. Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, or for groups to share small plates and drinks over an evening.

Cafe Royal

A grand Victorian bar and seafood restaurant, this historic spot is beautifully tiled and lovely to visit day or night. Check out the upstairs bars for something more cosy.

The Palmerston

West End restaurant in a former bank, with fantastic modern European dishes and warm contemporary décor.

Old Pal

Just near the Palmerston, this cocktail bar and kitchen is our most recent discovery. Incredible martinis and a great vibe.
